I was first inspired by my painting rotation week at University, in which I made a painting in response to ‘Make a painting of your studio space’. Although it was a quick, unrefined piece, I enjoyed the sarcasm in the piece and how other artists could relate to the self-doubts of being surrounded by art that they think is better than theirs. I then broadened to how the art world is perceived, and doubted, by people outside of the art world in regard to money, success, job prospects, whether art is a ‘hobby’ and how ‘easy’ it is. Whilst composing some texts on acetate to project onto people and photograph, I also decided to play around with some random letter compositions to separate the semi-serious messages from my other pieces. All background photos were taken by me of mixed media collages and objects, and then edited in Adobe Photoshop to create these 'substance' style hypnotic backgrounds.
